Chilton Public Library seeks a friendly, customer service focused person for a part-time Library Circulation Assistant. Bilingual Spanish-English preferred. This position includes afternoon and evening hours, rotating Saturday schedule and fill-in as needed. Duties of this position include assisting patrons in finding materials and using computers, fielding phone calls and questions, and working with other library staff to complete routine and special tasks. The ideal candidate is community focused, inclusive, creative, detail oriented, and able to work independently. Candidates must have strong communication and technology skills, the ability to assist patrons with technology related questions, have full range of body motion, and the ability to push a library cart weighing up to 100 pounds.

The starting salary is $12 per hour. Health and dental insurance not offered.

Library Circulation Assistants are often the first point of contact for library users and must provide excellent and enthusiastic customer service. Library Circulation Assistants may be asked to perform multiple, distinct roles and share tasks, so individuals in these positions must be comfortable with change and be team players. 

Work involves responsibility for routine circulation, shelf maintenance and clerical functions using automated circulation system.  This position will make beginning level library clerical decisions. 

Being the first contact for patrons, excellent customer service (in-person, over the phone, and online) abilities are required. Work will also include contacting patrons regarding overdue and lost materials.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Charges books, magazines and other library holdings in and out at the circulation desk using an automated circulation system.

  • Replaces books, magazines and other library holdings on shelves according to numbering sequences.

  • Discharges incoming library materials using an automated circulation system and inspects them for damages.

  • Performs routine library computer functions.

  • Operates a variety of standard office and library machines.

  • Performs routine book maintenance and processing.

  • Answers telephones and provides routine information or refers and transfers calls.

  • Assists in assuring accurate library shelving by shelf-reading and reshelving of materials, as needed.

  • Clerical, computer, and other library work as required

  • Promoting an appropriate friendly customer assistive work environment, and maintaining confidentiality in regards to patron’s records

  • Performs light housekeeping duties

  • Responsible for opening and/or closing facility

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma

  • Computer literacy including e-mail, basic software and hardware proficiency, and navigating the Internet.
